Wishing on a star

Big Dipper, Karen Elzinga, see and purchase her art
“Life is a dream, what you make of it is reality.” S.T. Holmes

“There's no point having wishes if you don't at least try to do them” - Sally Nicholls, Ways to Live Forever

“I've wished for things and never really had the chance...It's time to stop dreaming and do something about it. You've got to know what you want, then...go.” - Deb Caletti, The Six Rules of Maybe

It is unusual that I get to see anything "cool" during Ohio winters.  Last Wednesday morning's lunar eclipse was no exception.  I got up early hoping to see the full moon turn red as lipstick, but the skies were clouded over and the weather station predicted snow.  The moon didn't appear nor did the stars.  I was relegated to watch the eclipse via NASA internet streaming.

This month I'm switching to another aspect of Xi Wangmu: the Big Dipper.  I learned to identify this star pattern in Girl Scouts (NOTE: a pattern not a constellation, but part of one).  It was probably a requirement for a badge and I was into acquiring badges.  What fascinated me, and still does, is how the seven stars move around the fix point, the North Star (Polaris).  Each season being in a different position of scooping and pouring out.

It was the Phoenicians who showed Greek astronomer Thales, (600 BC) how they used the the Little Dipper to navigate the sea.  Thales in turn showed the Greek sailors a new way to steer by the stars.  When I look up at the Dippers on the occasional clear winter night, I wish my life could be as easy as following the Polaris star.

The Falling Star
Sara Teasdale (1884-1933)

“I saw a star slide down the sky,
Blinding the north as it went by,
Too burning and too quick to hold,
Too lovely to be bought or sold,
Good only to make wishes on
And then forever to be gone.”

I have been re-thinking, what do I need in my life to make me happy? Yes a yellow mustang convertible would be fun, but would I be happy. Similarly, It would be nice to have a mansion in the woods, but would I be happy? My annual intention setting is different this year. I have scaled it back to: what do I need to be happy. With this in mind, I answered the following affirmation statements.

I am
I create
I allow
I see
I cultivate
I manifest
I believe in the possibility that

What I realized from this exercise, I needed to move, dance, twirl; and I needed to express more joy and love.  The mansion didn't appear.  Instead, I need to manifest spontaneous laughter.

These are what I am wishing for this year.  These are my intentions.

Yorishiro – Honoring the spirits at WOW sites

Totoro.org
Yorishiro - A place inhabited by the Kami (spirit) or a place where Kami have been invited to come.

Six years ago I traveled to Japan to visit a relative.  One of the things I remember about this very different place was something I valued in my CCWWW practice: honoring my connection with earth, ancestors and the spirits of the place.  Touring the major cities, I discovered forested parks and quiet green spaces in-between traffic and noise.   These places were alive and I could immediately feel the WOW energy.  Throughout these parks people had decorated trees with flags or ceramic bowl with a single flower.

One of my favorite movies is My Neighbor Totoro (Miyazaki, 1988).  The animated film takes place in post war Japan.  It follows a story of a professor and his two daughters and their move to the country.  The house is closer to the hospital where the mother is being treated for an illness (i.e., most likely cancer due to the atomic bomb).  The move away from the city the girls discover the spirits of the place – one spirit Totoro who is the keeper of the forest.
Besides the adventures the girls have with the magical spirits, one piece of the film touches me.  The father and daughters are hiking into the forest and come to a large tree.  It is an ancient tree.  It is a tree that would take two or three people together to get their arms around.  The father stands reverently and bows; and the two girls mirror the gesture.

I have found myself often reverently bowing to places and trees even before my travels to Japan.  When I hike, I often leave an offering to the place.  This past summer hiking at Emerald Lake I was so moved by the place I left my ring.  I tossed it into the lake with an offering of thanks.  I think of my Ash tree and how I would tie brightly colored ribbons in her arms.  When I go to my family farm - I hug the ancient Oak.  Their spirit reminds me that I'm connected.

It is interesting that between some cultures there are similarities.  My neighbor has just set out her two potted pine trees by her door.  They are decorated with white tiny lights.  In Japan at this time two Kadomatsu’s (i.e., pine gate) are created and set out on either side of the front door.  The decoration is to welcome Kami into the homes.  The decoration is also to welcome the God of the New Year.  The elements of the Kadomatsu are chosen to symbolize what the person would like in the coming year: longevity, prosperity, steadfastness and respectively.

Vibrations – Creating Intention

Interference pattern in water

“Energy and mass (matter) are different forms of the same thing mass/energy” Einstein

“You are what your deepest desire is.
As your desire is, so is your intention.
As your intention is, so is your will.
As your will is, so is your deed.
As your deed is, so is your destiny.”
 ~ Upanishads

“The Law Of Vibration: Just as a pebble creates vibrations that appear as ripples, which travel outward in a body of water, your thoughts create vibrations that travel outward into the Universe, and attract similar vibrations that manifest as circumstances in your life.” ~ Unknown

Back in college, I remember sitting in my chemistry lecture.  The professor was droning on about atoms and chemical elements.  As you may know, the type of element (e.g., zinc, calcium or oxygen) is determined by the number of neutrons and protons.  He talked about how each element can be identified by using a mass spectrometer because each gives off its own unique signature vibration or color or how I came to think of it - their own song.   I sat, really not listening to the lecture absorbed in my own metaphysical thoughts.   Sitting and thinking:  Wow.  We’re each made up of the same elements held together through vibration or singing our own unique tune – like the uniqueness of our DNA.

Walking the magical path is about learning to understand and work with these different vibrations.  These vibrations can take the form of another person, an emotion, a place or an idea.  The only differences are the frequency of their vibration.

I think the biggest challenge comes when we come in contact with a different vibration.  Take Goldilocks’ experiment; to Goldie the smallest chair was just right for her.  The other two she didn’t like – for whatever reason.  However, Papa Bear liked the too hard chair and not the others.  The same is true when we enter a room.  Some rooms have a buzz we may connect to and others we want to run the other way.  These vibrations may be subtle or distinct like two pebbles dropped into waster and the waves collide.  In physics terms this is called an interference pattern.  Again, your colliding into another’s vibration may create beautiful music together or stormy crashes.

Another aspect many magical practitioners tend to forget is that we leave our vibration signatures on the places and things we touch.  This becomes a problem when we are working with our magical tools.  For example, if you use candles you need to clean the candles of the vibrations and energy of everyone who has handled them: the woman who packaged them into their shipping boxes, the UPS gal delivering them to the store, the guy who unpacked them onto the display counter, and all the people who came into the shop who may or may have not touched them.  Everyone has left their vibrational signature onto the candles.  It doesn’t mean that everyone is out there zapping angry energy at everything – it’s just a fact.  The point being, if you don’t clean the candles then all these people become part of your magical work.

I tend to use sea salt with everything.  As you know, sea salt is a combination of two elements: earth and water.  It seems to have a way of absorbing negative energy and transforming it into positive energy.  I like to leave a dish out in the Northeast corner of my house (Feng Shui).  I tend to think of it like air freshener and change every month.  The old is flushed down the toilet, however do not do this if you have a septic tank.  For my magical elements, I either put it into a dish of sea salt or lay the object near the bowl.  I then offer a prayer to Motherfather Spirit.

“All that we are is a result of what we have thought,” stated Buddha

~#~

A ritual, prayer or magical spell is used to bring an intention into form.  By lighting a charged candle of a certain color frequency or incense to attract a certain emotion or by creating a spell pouch or creative visualization collage - you are adding a physical representations to the intent.  When you add spoken words or a song you add yet another vibration to the intention.  The candle and the words spoken each have different vibrational frequencies that the practitioner is sending out into the world to manifest their desires.  I view these all as a means of communicating with Motherfather Spirit what I desire.

Note:  Think hard and long if you are doing this work because you are angry or in pain or you are out to hex someone.  Remember all that you send out will be returned back 3 times multiplied.  Also, I’m a firm believer of blending western medicine with spiritual work.  Check out Dr. Weil and integrated medicine – it is the best of both worlds.

Protection candle spell

Cleaned black candle and candle holder
Cedar essential oil
Pin

Sit down and write out what you want.  Specifically, what protection would look like?  How would protection make you feel?  Keeping these thoughts in mind, use the pin and mark in the following runes onto the candle: Algiz, Fehu, and Thurisaz.  Next, anoint the candle with the essential oil.  Rub the essential oil into the candle thinking about the answers to the two questions.  Hold the candle in both hands.  Out loud, tell Motherfather spirit what you want.  Tell Motherfather spirit why you want and need protection.  At the end of your prayer or spoken words add “Not my will but thy will – so mote it be.”  Next light the candle and leave it to burn.

Transformation – giving up the caterpillar suit.

Monarch Butterfly Site
"Every exit is an entry somewhere else." - Tom Stoppard
"Perhaps the Egyptians chose the beetle as a god of creation, and not some more noble creature, because that lowly image hints at the possibility that transformation begins at the bottom level and attains the highest."  — Normandi Ellis in Dreams of Isis
“One cannot become a butterfly by remaining a caterpillar.” ~Anonymous

I’ve been sitting on my porch mourning the loss of my Ash.  There’s a circle of dirt where she used to stand.  The leaves in my neighborhood are turning orange and burnt red; I miss seeing hers turn yellow.  I wonder where my winter bird feeders will hang without her outstretched arms.  And, know that next summer my house will be hotter without her shade.    I wonder who will take her place.
In my front bed garden, there’s a lone Monarch dancing between the last butterfly bush flowers and the browning white coneflowers.  I think, “Honey you aren’t going to make it to Mexico.”  I know it isn’t thinking this; it isn’t like me who’d be obsessing over these thoughts like wondering if I had enough money for gas and snacks to make it to Mexico and did I remember to pack my passport and contact lens case.  No.  I know the Monarch is living for the moment like it did when it hung up-side-down in that dark cocoon.   Because death is inevitable; everything dies.  It’s part of the great carbon nitrogen cycle.
Part of magical living is to gracefully revolving around the transformation cycle.

We delight in the beauty of the butterfly, but rarely admit the changes it has gone through to achieve that beauty.” ~Maya Angelou
“What the caterpillar perceives is the end, to the butterfly is just the beginning.” ~Anonymous

Admit it.  When you see this card, you hear the sound effects from the Psycho knife scene (Hitchcock, 1960) Your stomach lurches and you want to run in the opposite direction.   We see ”Death” as the end, a termination, going bust with no more tomorrows or the final words seen after the last paragraph in a book that we loved reading;  that cake that got lost in the rain and you’ll never have that recipe again (Summers, 1978); or that beloved sweater that has a hole in it; or trying to figure out what to do now that your retirement funds have bottomed out.  The same can be said anytime we have to change, we mourn the loss of doing something familiar and it’s hard to let go.  It's hard to let go of our caterpillar suit.
But death isn’t really like that.  It’s all in how your see it and how you deal with it. A CCWWW knows it is healthy to mourn the loss and is respectful of how painful change may be.  But, they also know death is about an entrance to something new.  It’s about transformation and hope like the phoenix rise from the ashes. A CCWWW can see change as the next step to a life make over like getting a new hairdo or a new clothing style.  A CCWWW sees themselves as a forever student in magical living and part of growing includes changing in mind, body and spirit.

Changing Woman
By Annie Finch

If we change as she is changing,
if she changes as we change

(If she changes, I am changing)

Who is changing, as I bend
down to what the sky has sent us?

(Is she changing, or the same?)

~#~
Joseph Campbell stated,  “We're not on our journey to save the world but to save ourselves. But in doing that you save the world.”  A CCWWW knows this and tries to live out their life in a different way.  They work out of their heart versus their mind and ego.  They live by knowing themselves and in a way that doesn't hurt others or the enviornment.  A CCWWW knows that by healing themselves they heal the world.  Or as Mahatma Gandhi said: "You must be the change you wish to see in the world."

~#~

NOTE:  A CCWWW knows sometimes it is hard to grieve loss alone.  Sometimes change brings about depression and you feel like you’ve hit rock bottom.  A CCWWW knows that as a wise leader who sets examples by showing others that it’s okay to seek out help from a licensed counselor or social work.  A CCWWW also knows the local hotline or can share the US National Suicide Prevention Lifeline (24/7) 1-800-273-TALK(8255).

Purification – cleansing our thoughts

“We are shaped by our thoughts; we become what we think. When the mind is pure, joy follows like a shadow that never leaves.”  ~ Buddha

“Those who are free of resentful thoughts surely find peace.” ~Buddha

“Always aim at complete harmony of thought and word and deed. Always aim at purifying your thoughts and everything will be well.” ~ Mahatma Gandhi

Lammas Day here in Ohio was really hot and humid.  The celebration I attended had an outdoors fire going.  This managed to create enough heat to perhaps bake bread.  A quick sniff test – I was relieved to learn that my deodorant was still managing to give off its “spring fresh” scent throughout the ceremony.

A couple of weeks later my leader sent out a quick post evaluation of the event. The lack of purification came up quite a few times in his observation.  The noted lack of purification seemed odd to me, because it seems like common knowledge that you should do this before going to any ceremonial event: keeping Sabot, wedding ceremonies, visiting a new baby, going out to dinner at a nice restaurant for someone's birthday…..

Purification or ritual cleansing before any ceremonies is an ancient tradition.  It’s done in order to prepare the physical body to act as a liaison between the spiritual and physical plane.  A cleansing before a ritual or ceremony is done to wash away residual energy both seen and unseen.

I can see some of you doing the hand flip of “yea right” on the unseen stuff.

Think about this - have you ever been in an office that causes your neck hairs to rise?  Or perhaps you’re at a person’s house and as you move room to room it feels like cobwebs are sticking to your arm.  Have you ever sat through a meeting where everyone is arguing and you end up with one whopping headache?

That “stuff” you are feeling is sticking to your body’s energy field until you remove it.

Think of that “stuff” as a piece of dust you find in your sofa.  Look at it closely, there’s a lot of stuff there: hair, cookie crumbs, lint and that button you’ve been looking for since….Get the picture?  This is what surrounds your energy field and ultimately effects how you think and feel.

I’ve found there seems to be a lot written about how to cleanse the physical body and the physical environment (i.e., purification bathes, aura cleansing, appropriate ritual clothing, listing of cleansing herbs, smudging and salt containers to pull out negative energy), but not so much on how to purify the mind/thoughts and heart.

Spending time on Navajo Nation, my preceptor told me that thoughts are silent messages out to the universe. Negative thoughts have a way of putting a kink into the universe.  I think of them as the sludge that gunks up the magic in the world.  In car terms, it is the very reason why you need to change your oil – if you don’t your engine might halt, that red light might turn on which leads to a sizable mechanics fee.  The red light under magical conditions can mean that intended love spell has now been directed to another or has been transformed into lust.  Examples of my gunk include:  focusing on what the heck I’m going to do with all those tomatoes; stressed out on how I’m going to get all those tasks done at work, or anxious about my son’s grades.

I’ve brought the importance of mental cleansing up before a ceremony before.  I feel people seem to brush me off saying: “Oh.  Did that.” or “Good thoughts, check.”  When people tell me this, I feel mental cleansing has been reduced to an easy and quick process like lathering up your hands with lavender soap.  When I have this type of attitude, I’ve found that I tend to be distracted or show a lack of concentration in my work.  To me, purifying the mind goes beyond ticking off “positive thoughts.”  It requires a time and space devoted to introspection, personal change and self-control.

Much of the written work done regarding how to purify the mind has been completed by both the Buddhist and Yoga communities.  The common key is looking at how we react to patterns.  This is done through meditation by doing a mental check in about noticing what is going on in your mind without judgments and accepting it.

Nineteen, The Sun and Namaste

Sunflower field
"I honor the place within you where the entire Universe resides; I honor the place within you of love, of light, of truth, of peace; I honor the place within you, where, when you are in that place in you, and I am in that place in me, there is only one of us." ~ Mahatma Gandhi

“We are members one of another; so that you cannot injure or help your neighbor without injuring or helping yourself.” ~ George Bernard Shaw
"This we know: All things are connected like the blood that unites us. We did not weave the web of life,  We are merely a strand in it. Whatever we do to the web, we do to ourselves."  ~ Chief Seattle

I parked in lot 19 today and the first thing that came to my mind was fields of sunflowers growing on the plains of Kansas, my version of the tarot card.  I can see the sunny blue sky, orange petals with large black centers, swaying a hello in the wind.   These Van Gogh colors symbolically remind me to do what makes me happy.  I get that lighthearted feeling that everything is going to be okay, it will all turn out right just put on a smiley Band-Aid and find something to laugh about.

Nature has a way of reminding me that everything is interconnected.  The sun not only gives me warmth but is also one of the needed ingredients to make my garden grow vegetables.  (Those chloroplast within the plant cell use the sun rays for creating energy.)  In turn, I eat them in wonderful salads and stir-fried in ginger and soy sauce over rice – each bite gives me energy.  The sun’s energy is transferred to me and I become connected to the sun and the vegetable plant.  The question becomes what will I do with this energy?  Do I share this power freely or keep it to myself?

I smiled as I walked the ¼ mile into work.  Funny – it is like a chain reaction.  Others see you smile and they smile to.

The Sun by Mary Oliver

Have you ever seen
anything
in your life
more wonderful

than the way the sun,
every evening,
relaxed and easy,
floats toward the horizon

and into the clouds or the hills,
or the rumpled sea,
and is gone–
and how it slides again

out of the blackness,
every morning,
on the other side of the world,
like a red flower

streaming upward on its heavenly oils,
say, on a morning in early summer,
at its perfect imperial distance–
and have you ever felt for anything
such wild love–
do you think there is anywhere, in any language,
a word billowing enough
for the pleasure

that fills you,
as the sun
reaches out,
as it warms you

as you stand there,
empty-handed–
or have you too
turned from this world–

or have you too
gone crazy
for power,
for things?

I went to yoga class at lunch.  Talk about law of coincidence or Jung’s Synchronicity?  My Instructor announced that this Yoga session would be devoted to our interconnectedness.  He didn’t know what was going on in Central Ohio, but felt that the Universe was offering opportunities to learn about this concept with the storms and accidents.

7 Sun Salutations: purity of spirit, forgiveness, service to others, compassion, faith, healing and wisdom.

~#~

On June30th a terrible storm came through Central Ohio.  Winds were clocked up to 85 miles an hour.  T called me at work that afternoon and asked if I wanted a ride.  I thought he was joking and said: “I rode my bike home yesterday in this heat.  It can’t be any hotter since lunch (98 F).”  He asked if I had risen out of cubicle land to look out the window.  The sky was pitch black looking more like 5 pm during December.  I requested a ride home for my bike and myself.  I felt like Dorothy in the Kansas.  T gave a ride to one of my walking co-workers.

As of this week (July 13) out in the rural areas of Central Ohio, there are still people without power.  Besides not having power for at least a fan to move the hot humid air, many can’t run the pumps for their wells.  My grid was one of the lucky ones; we were one of the first up and running.  I immediately offered my outlets for electronics or someplace to escape the heat.

Strangely, these events haven’t stopped.  During these last two weeks, several major accidents on Columbus’ main freeways have managed to snarl traffic during the morning rush hour: a deadly crash, a car drove off the freeway into a building, and today a train derailment with an explosion.

But the news has offered up numerous stories about people in Central Ohio showing kindness and love.  People have ask those without electricity over for supper in a cool house; stringing an electrical cord across the street so a neighbor’s freezer can remain on; created brigades with power saws to move trees out of the streets; made room in freezers for someone’s recently put up peaches; or drove someone to work because the bus is too packed to let person on.

1+9=10=1 – weirdly it all ends up back to the magician and E=mc2 with that WOW energy that can jazz up the world or tear it down.  I notice that many seem to be sharing the magical spell of kindness by reaching out to others.

Namaste
My Yoga instructor ends our time ritually saying “Namaste.”  This simple gesture acknowledges the soul in one by the soul in another.  Translated poetically this ancient Sanskrit means: “the divine light in me, respects the divine light in you.”  Namaste is a symbol of love, respect and gratitude towards another allowing us to come together energetically as one.

To carry out the Namaste gesture face a partner.  Place your hands together at your heart chakra, close your eyes and bow your head saying: “Namaste.”

On a spiritual level, bringing your hands together at your heart chakra increases the Divine energy within you.  By bowing your head and closing your eyes , it helps quiets the mind in order to hear the messages from the Divine (Motherfather Spirit).   This gesture reminds us to live from our hearts by doing so we can see the beauty and love in all people.

May we show compassion to others, especially the electric company who is doing the best they can.
Ommm
May we invite others over who are without electricity.
Ommm
May we ask someone without electricity to dinner.
Ommm
May we be willing to accept invitations to dinner.

May we check on a neighbor to see if they are okay.
Ommm
May we be willing to offer a person a ride
Ommm
May we learn we are all connected and everything we do affects someone else.
Ommm
May we love more and live more from our hearts.
Ommm

Omm is believed to be the original sound that rose at the time of creation.  It is called the sound of the universe.  Chanting omm allows us to reconnect with creation’s movement: the waves against the shore, the movement of birds flying, the rising and setting of the sun and moon.  We remember our place in the symphony of Divine love.

Jazzing it up: A needed cooking ingredient

Julia Child
“The power of thought, the magic of the Mind!” ~ Lord Byron

“This is my invariable advice to people: Learn how to cook- try new recipes, learn from your mistakes, be fearless, and above all have fun!” ~ Julia Child, My Life in France

“Cooking is like love; it should be entered into with abandon or not at all.” ~ Julia Child

“...no one is born a great cook, one learns by doing.” ~ Julia Child, My Life in France

My mom started her second part time job when I was in middle school.  One of my chores to help out was to fix dinner.  It was a matter of two weeks when I got sick of preparing variations on Kraft Macaroni and Cheese, spaghetti and meatloaf, potatoes and green beans.  My siblings were fine with the favorite food meals in my house, but for me there had to be something more.

PBS was running Julia Child re-runs of her original cooking show.   I loved watching Julia’s show because she was funny and she looked like she was having a great time.  Julia made cooking look easy and magical.  I also liked her because she wasn’t a skinny chef.  Julia looked like she ate what she cooked.  That meant a lot to me, especially when I was being told I was fat weighing in at 110lbs at 5’4”.

I use to believe all you’d get great results if you only followed the recipe by focusing; being determined and concentrating.  But, I learned this wasn’t true.  Your frame of mind has a powerful influence in how your food tastes.  You can either “jazz it up” with love energy or “dirge it down” with angry and sadness.

One book immediately comes to my mind that illustrates this point is Como Agua Para Chocolate (Like Water for Chocolate) by Mexicanwriter Laura Esquivel.  This is a must read for all CCWWW.   The main character Tita is able to emerse the food she cooks with her emotions.  The narrator tells us Tita’s story in twelve monthly installments complete with recipes.  We learn about Tita’s magical skills when she bakes Chabela Wedding Cake for the man she loved.  Unfortunately, he was marrying her sister.  Tita cries into the batter and those who eat the cake?  They are overcome with sadness and despair.   And, then Tita creates her dish of love "Quails in rose petal sauce."  Seeclip.

Back in my E=mc2 post, I wrote about this.  Specifically, your thoughts can create reality.  And, I know when I talk to people many are thinking: “thoughts having energy – poppycock.  You’re feeding me a crock of hog wash.”

I wrote of Masaru Emoto’s a Japanese researcher and his study.  He took pictures of water crystal.  Specifically he was looking at their crystalline form.  Most startling to me were the photos of water crystals that had been exposed to thoughts of love and kindness vs. I hate you thoughts.  When I wrote in analyze about questioning – the scientific evidence of Emoto convinced me this was the case.

He also did another experiment around rice.  Over the next four weeks I plan on carrying out this experiment.  See clip

Rice Experiment:

Materials needed
3 canning jars with lids
Cooked rice
3 index cards and tape
Timer

Procedure:
Fill all three jars with cooked rice.
On jar Number one, write “I love you” on the index card and tape it to the outside of the jar.
On jar Number two, write “I hate you” on the index card and tape it to the outside of the jar.
On jar Number three, write nothing on the card and tape it to the outside of the jar.  This is your control jar.

Place the jars in three separate places on the dining room buffet.  Each day: the jars will have one minute of focus with the feelings of the words.  If you feel angry and had a bad day – now would be the time to tell that jar how you feel.  The “I love you” jar - give it feelings of love (kissing, hugging and singing love songs are welcomed).  The control jar – just leave alone.

Record observed results.
